Chief

  • Zi Su Zi 75g (9-12g) Acrid, warming and moistening, directs rebellious qi downward, expels phlegm, stops coughing, arrests wheezing. A seed, it has a sinking nature, and contains oils to moisten the bowels. Facilitates the functions of the Large Intestine as well as the Lungs, it is a primary herb for controlling rebellious Lung qi.

Deputy

  • bàn xià 75g (6-9g) direct qi downward, transform the phlegm.
  • hòu pò 30g (3-6g) direct qi downward, transform the phlegm.

Assistant

  • chén pí 45g (6-9g) assists "h:ban xia" in transforming phlegm and regulating the qi.
  • dāng guī 45g (6-9g) treats cough from rebellious qi. Also, this disorder "represents an acute aggravation of a chronic disorder. Chronic disorders "devitalize" the blood. This herb harmonizes the qi and blood.
  • qián hú 30g (6-9g) Assists "h:hou po" in directing qi downward and is a special herb for expelling phlegm. Cooling alone, but in combination with warming herbs, only its phlegm-transformation and qi-directing properties are evident.
  • ròu guì 45g (1.5-3g) Warms the fire at the gate of vitality and directs the floating yang back to its source, to facilitate the kidney's ability to grasp the qi. Its yang-warming action also helps to disperse cold.
